As we read through the Minor Prophets this summer, we will see that the main problem they are plagued with is the problem of identity amnesia. They forget who they are as God's people, and where they are in God's promised land. In short, they lose the plot to the story. They forget who they are and where they are in God's Story, and as a result, they turn to two common forms of sin: idolatry and injustice. They worship the wrong things, they wrong others, and in all of this, they betray God's covenant. Yet, God's faithfulness perseveres and calls them back to be the people He has called them to be.

In this series we will explore how God's redemptive story continues despite the corruption of our sin and the chaos of our world.

Amnesia is a serious medical condition involving significant memory loss. It is a disorienting and disheartening condition that causes confusion and forgetfulness. Amnesia can cause a person to forget who they are and where they are.

As we read through the Minor Prophets this summer, we will see that the main problem they are plagued with is the problem of identity amnesia. They forget who they are as God's people, and where they are in God's promised land. In short, they lose the plot to the story. Corps of Dreaming: Last summer the Corps of Dreaming was organized to discern Immanuel's vision and values. For the past year we have listened to some of your stories of what you love about Immanuel and what makes Immanuel unique. Through these stories and our discussions, we have spent time discerning and discussing what we believe Immanuel's core identity and values to be. While the work is far from completed, the Corps of Dreaming is ready to present what we have discerned to the larger Immanuel community.

Following the service on Sunday, May 19th, we will present the core identity and values we have discerned as a team and then engage in the process of a listening session together. Congregational Meeting: Our annual Congregational meeting will be held in the sanctuary, after the service, on Sunday, June 9th. On the agenda will be a proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year, and the selection of one new deacon, and one new elder.

Following a presentation of the Corps' proposal you all will be invited to offer your input in small groups of 5-6 people. We want to stress that what we will present is not final, but a presentation of what we have discerned. We would like the community of Immanuel's input as we continue to discern how God has uniquely gifted and called us as a church.

We are planning to be done by noon. While attending the listening session is the best way to participate in this process, if you are unable to attend you will still have a chance to review and respond to the proposed values statements.

Lastly, we invite everyone to join with the Corps of Dreaming in pausing every day at noon over the next month to pray for this time of discernment.

"Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches." Revelation 2:7 The Message Translation.

As we saw in our previous series through Revelation, Revelation was not written to predict how the world will one day end, but to strengthen Christian's to endure in faithfulness to Christ’s mission in the midst of uncertain and threatening times. Having seen this throughout the book of Revelation, we now turn our attention to the messages Jesus gives the 7 churches the letter was originally written to. These words may not have been originally written to us, but we will see they were certainly written for us as we learn from the messages Jesus gives them. In this series we will seek to listen to and learn from Jesus’ words of commendation, confrontation, and exhortation as we seek to learn what the church looks like when the wind of the Spirit blows through.

Thank you for joining us at Immanuel Community Reformed Church where our mission is, “Going into our community, imitating Christ, by feeding body and soul.

Please welcome Rev. Tom Grabill this morning who will be preaching to us today from Luke 24:36-49, asking the question, “If eternal life exists, could loved ones contact us from beyond?” and “If this happened, what would we do, feel, say?”

The disciples spoke with Jesus after His death. In the encounter Jesus offered peace, reassurance, anda response. This extraordinary encounter set the scope of Luke's second book, the book of Acts. Might it still have the power to catalyze the continued spread of God's love even today?

Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2024

Tonight, as we hear from God’s word and celebrate communion together, we are reminded of how our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ humbled Himself to serve us and save us on the cross. As the Apostle Paul tells us of Christ in Philippians 2:7-8, "He made Himself nothing," and became obedient to the point of death on the cross.

On this Thursday night before the cross, traditionally called Maundy Thursday, we reflect on what Christ has done for us and how He calls us to witness to the good news of His redeeming work.

A New Command

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch

that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have

loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Sunday, March 24, 2024

In this series we hope to reclaim Revelation as the beautiful gift it is for the church. Revelation is easily the most misunderstood and feared book of the Bible. Which is unfortunate, because, as we will see in this series, Revelation was originally written to bring comfort not confusion. Its words were meant to inspire confidence, not incite fear. Its vivid imagery is meant to describe the world as it is, not predict its ending. Revelation was originally written to seven churches who existed during a time of great persecution and oppression against Christians.

The words of Revelation were meant to give its hearers confidence to endure in faithfulness to Christ and His mission while living amid an uncertain and threatening world.
